  4. This software is (technically speaking) *not* public domain, in that
  5. the author retains copyright at all times, but permission is granted
  6. to freely use and/or distribute the software providing that no charge
  7. (other than for media & handling) is made for it. You may freely

  14. Right, boring stuff out of the way, now let's get on with it...

  16. What does it do?

  18. Well, basically it runs 'fsck' in the background (allowing you to continue
  19. work in the desktop) and lets you know how it went. Since running fsck in
  20. this manner produces no screen output it makes it suitable for use as a
  21. repeating task alarm in !Alarm (which is basically why I wrote the thing).

  23. Features:
  24.     * 'Auto-Quit'   If fsck returns 'map good', the appplication can
  25.                     be set to quit after a (configurable) delay. See
  26.                     the !Run file to find out how.
  27.     * Small window; takes up very little room on your desktop. Notice
  28.                     the 'toggle size' icon? full size (but still nice
  29.                     and small) the window gives a little more info.
  30.     * Beeping;      if fsck returns a 'bad' code for whatever reason,
  31.                     the app can be made to beep at reqular intervals
  32.                     (to hopefully get your attention). Again, see the
  33.                     !Run file to find out how.
  34.     * Configurable; you can set the disc to 'fsck' in the !Run file, or
  35.                     (more versatile), use "%0" and tag the disc name onto
  36.                     the app. name in !Alarm's 'Set Alarm' window.
  37.     * Compact & neat.

  39. You'll need to edit the !Run file before the app will run.
  40. You can set the wimpslot to allocate to the 'fsck' task by editing the line
  41. 'SET fsckfrend$slotsize ....' I haven't bothered fiddling with this much
  42. since I've got a 4Mb machine so memory isn't that scarce. If needs be, you
  43. can experiment and try to find out how little you can get away with :-)
  44. Don't confuse this with the app's Wimpslot set earlier in the !run file.
  45. (There are two 'Wimpslot' commands in the !Run file, the first makes sure
  46. that there's enough memory for *both* the taskwindow and the app, the
  47. second sets the wimpslot for the app. Change the first if you want, but
  48. don't set the second to be any less than 32k)

  50. NB: you'll need fsck 1.21 or later (available on Hensa/stuttgart/etc) to
  51. use this app. The executable 'fsck' should be somewhere on your run$path
  52. since the app. simply uses the command 'fsck <whatever>' to start fsck.

  55. The application should run under RiscOS 2 (but I'm not sure), although
  56. you'll need the 'taskwindow' module loaded (it's in !Edit's directory,
  57. called 'Task'), or available in !System.Modules (where it should have been
  58. anyway, acorn...)
